New Site Layout
Time for a change, it’s as good as a holiday. The old layout was a pretty boring derivative of the default Kubrick theme for Wordpress, so it’s about time I updated it to something new. The motivation for this redesign came from the type of things I want to write here.
Mostly this site has been used to keep up to date with distant family (Hi Vilma!) and distant friends. We’ve been really happy with that part of the site, and that’s why we continue to post information here about what we’re up to.
One problem that’s been bugging me for a while is that I’d like to write more technically oriented posts, but I don’t want to mix them up with our personal posts — our non-technical friends and family wouldn’t appreciate them, and most people who’d be interested in reading my technical rants don’t care to know so much about our renovations and cats. So that’s why I’ve split up the posts into Personal and Professional.
Additionally, the Personal posts can be divided into two groups: high frequency posts from my mobile phone, and low frequency personal posts that I spend more time creating. The mobile posts tend to push the longer posts off the front page very quickly, so I split them out into their own separate category.
The last motivation was to give the Projects section proper weight in the visual layout, since we post a lot of information there in static pages. So now the projects section makes up an even quarter of the layout and has proper emphasis.
The next task is to create feeds for each of those sections, but that can come later. For the time being there’s still the main feed (and the comments feed too).
The new layout has pretty much been thrown together and there’s a reasonable list of TODOs, so watch your step — there might be a few bugs.

Looks great Stew - good combination of personal style with functionality.

Thanks Gregg. Another new feature: the comments are now threaded, so conversations in the comments will make more sense!
I’m not 100% happy with the layout of the threading, but I can fix that with some CSS.

Wow, I should test in other browsers. I just looked at this site in IE6 (I’ve been testing in FireFox 2 and IE7) and it looks terrible — completely broken!
Dammit!
