Cradle
While we were down in Bridgetown for our wedding anniversary weekend Lana and I picked up a second-hand cradle as our first present for our new baby. We’d just had the 12-week scan and received the all-clear, and the last thing the sonologist said to us was, “everything is going well, go and buy your baby a present.” So we did.
The only problem with the cradle is that the legs are a bit thin and not rigid enough, so Lana asked me to fix that. My solution to that is to build a box around the bottom of the legs (which will also be useful for storage) and to put some wheels on the bottom so we can push it around.
Before I did any renovations on the cradle I checked in with the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission to make sure the cradle meets current recommended guideines. They publish a really handy booklet called Keeping Baby Safe that gives you all the recommended measurements and so on. The good news is the cradle is safe!
I forgot to take any photos during construction, but it came together pretty well. I pulled the whole thing apart and built the box around the legs, and put a large piece of timber between the legs and attached to the box in the base. The frame is really rigid now, and with the wheels on the bottom it’s easy to roll around the house.
We added some baskets to the base (we found some cheap ones that fit perfectly) which make a handy place to keep essential baby supplies.
